Paper Scanning
Sometimes scanning is confused with Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Scanning essentially converts analog data into digital format. When paper is scanned, it is converted to image form and becomes readable using a computer. Once in image form, data can be stored or indexed as needed.
A scanned image can also be converted back into text. This requires an OCR program. This conversion from image to text can take place right away or much later, depending on the needs of the organization. In some cases, a scanned document need not ever be converted to text.
Once a scanned image has been converted to text, that text can be indexed or pasted into a document. In some situations, systems are designed that allow users to implement text searches for scanned documents, yet view the original scanned document images, rather than converted text. This may be useful when the original paper document contains special markings or graphics that cannot be converted to simple text using the OCR program.
